                                              Outer Worlds Investigations
                                                     Episode 1 The Base

At just before 10pm 3 Guardsmen approached the gate of the military base, watched from the shadows by their two accomplices a man & a woman, these five made up the newly appointed investigation team.

The plan is to try to get into the office of Commandant Orr to gain any information as to why the Commandant has been in the company of a freight company owner called Urlock Neaster of late, Neaster has been under the watchful eye of C.I.B for sometime now.
Their papers checked the barrier is raised they walk in turning left to head for the billets.
Once around the corner out of the sight of the guards at the gate they stop at the door of the storage area of the complex, they intend to gain access through this door & make their way to the commandants office but need to be careful not to draw the attention of the guard in the watch tower close by.
At this time of the night the complex is empty & they make their way quickly along to the far end to Orr's office which is across from the armory
At same time outside agent Charlie Makay is making her way around to the the side of the base that the door to the armory faces out to.
Once she's in place investigator Paul Unsworth will move from his vantage point on the roof of a building on the corner.
Back inside the three agents are trying to over ride the lock or Orr office door.
Just as Unsworth gets into position alarms go off all over the base &
Guards start to pure out of the billets.
What set the alarm off was Andrea Raponi trying to open the door to Orr's office which he has now done,
Ford Lapin takes up a position to cover the corridor, as Julian Carter heads into the armory to check the way out is clear.
The guards are wasting no time &
some of them have already reach the door of the storage area.
Over the coms-link Makay"You'd better hurry it up in there guys company is on it way"
A sergeant leads his men into the storage area moving carefully,
as Raponi now inside Orr's office goes to work on the computer.
Unsworth &Makay spot a sergeant trying to open the outer door of the armory
& cut him down
just before Carter, who is now joined by Lapin open the door from the inside, they now have their way out, but won't be leaving just yet.
At the other end of the complex guards are moving carefully through the storage area.
Seen the sergeant go down these guys slows down, getting shot at is not what they signed up for.
Shooting the sergeant has alerted the guard in the watchtower nearest to the armory door to the present of those outside & he fires at Makay wounding her.
Raponi is still at work on the computer,
as gunfire breaks out inside the complex, over the coms-link Carter" Hurry it up Andrea, things have gone hot in here.

Hearing this Unsworth blows the charges on the fence that they had set up at the time of the recon.
At this point the only danger to the escape are the two guards in the watchtowers.
Makay now wounded gets out of sight,
as inside Carter's is in a firefight with the guards at the far end of the corridor,
but the guards have numbers on their side & start to advance down it.
Outside guards are now heading for the armory door, have they left it to late ?
Lapin joins Carter at the junction but their still out gunned & under the covering fire of his man,
the sergeant makes his way down the corridor,
from cover to cover.
Unsworth, hears over the link Raponi"I've completed the hack sir" getting worried about his men coming under to much fire leaving the building he moves out onto the road while firing to keep the guards busy & gives the order to forget about the safe & get out.
he's backed up by Makay who wounded is still in the fight.
Raponi heads out of the room,
as one of the guards is taken out while trying to move down the corridor.
Unsworth comes under fire,
from both towers & is hit,
as Lapin makes it to the outer door.
Unsworth comes under yet more fire as one of the guards that was at the gate rounds the corner of the complex.
Just as Carter is about to pull back the sergeant reaches him.
Now at the outer door Lapin comes under fire.
Makay seen him switches her gun to semi-auto to try & keep the guards heads down,
but then comes under fire from the guard in the tower.
Unsworth drops a guard but then his gun jams,
as Lapin is joined by Rapon,Lapin" where's Carter ?" over the coms Unsworth" Do not re-enter the complex, repeat do not re-enter"
Carter is now trying to fight off two guards.
Lapin covered by Raponi in the doorway start for the downed part of the fence firing as he goes.
once outside he & Unswoth who has un-jammed his gun giving Raponi covering fire,
taking out the last of the guards.
Only the guard in the tower is covering this part of the base for now,
but the guard from the gate is closing in.
Lapin backs up a a bit & takes him out,
but their not in the clear yet as another guard nears the doorway firing on Unsworth.
Under the covering fire of the three Raponi sprints to safety,
the information from the computer is safe.
Unsworth heads over to Makay,as the guard moves into the complex, things are looking bad for Carter,
but a well placed shot from Unsworth does for him, there's hope yet.
Lapin is now under fire from the guard in the far tower, as he makes good his escape.
Unsworth jumps the wall &
the combined fire of him & Makay take out the guard in the tower,
The way is clear for Carter if he can make it.
With no sign of Carter, Unsworth & Makay with draw.
Things have not improved for Carter, & he is now surround by three guards,
he drops one but is over come.
The sergeant & two guards march out of the complex with their prisoner.

Designers note, I'm not sure where to start as I don't how easy it was for you lot to follow, but I'll start at the main gate to get pass the gate the lads need to pas an academic test (AC) Lapin has the highest 43 so his was used, I gave him a +20 on the roll as it wasn't to be hard to get in.

Next point was the door to the storage area this was a technical test (TC) Raponi has the highest 55 so the test was on his, again its not to be to hard so +20, but there was a guard near by in the watchtower & while he wasn't watching them he might hear the door open, so test on his AC which is 35 7 he failed.

Once at Orr's office they need another TC test, this door was meant to be harder to open so no modifier, again this was on Raponi TC of 55 the first try failed he tried again but this time rolled 97 which is a critical failure so the alarm goes off.

At this point the game goes to what I call live which bring the guards into play I now start to use a card system to activate the models in play, my team the investigators & the NCP's the guards who I place the rest of over at the billets.

Setting the alarm off meant the 3 guys inside the base had to take a nerve test (NV) to see how they react, Raponi NV 49 passed so was fine to carry on, Lapin NV 45 only just failed rolled for actions (A) & got 1 as he'd only just failed I decided that moving him back from the door to cover the corridor made sense, Carter NV 26 on the other hand fail by a good bit got 3 actions on his roll, so ran to the inner armory door open it TC test 1A & runs into it, as this is the quickest way out of the complex, next time they activate they both have to test again & both fail & now Carter is at the outer door of the armory which he's opened & Lapin is following him, luckily they both passed the next time or they would have keep running away & the only thing that could have got them back in the fight would have been a hard leadership (LD) against Unsworth's LD 68 at -20.

I hope that helps you understand things as the way I'm doing this is very different from normal, it was all so possible that they could have gotten in & out of the base without the game going live at all, but how good a movie that would make I'm not sure :)

That's a rap, as always my thanks for dropping in & if you'd care to be a movie critic & leave a comment it would be welcomed :)

  1. No matter how you came to the decisions the figures made, it all made for a good and logical read.
Great set-up and innovative scenario with plenty of action.

    1. Thanks Joe, as a solo player yourself you'll understand how important it is to make honest decisions be they good or bad to your chances of (I don't what to say winning) getting the right result, the trick then is to try putting even things that went wrong into the story in away that works.

As people don't get to see the game played out I thought it a good idea to show them that everything doesn't work the way you want all the time, a bit like the way a movie might show you shots that went wrong at the end while the credits are running :)

  2. Hi Frank, I'm a bit tired at the moment and there is a lot going on in this story, so I will read it again tomorrow.
However I just wanted to say what fantastic atmospheric photos you have got. The dark corridors, and the shadows are brilliant.

You need to give your cameraman a big bonus. I think I might have said this before so perhaps a very big bonus is in order.
    Cheers

    1. Thanks John, remember second showing is half price if you still have your ticket :)

What you want me to pay a guy more for doing what he's paid for in the first place ? I hope this is not some ply on your behalf to unsettle him so your studio's can sign him up ;)

Tbh I was very happy with a lot of the shots he got but I need to give credit to the crew as well who where very busy removing walls to allow those shots to be taken.

    2. Hi Frank - I kept the ticket and snuck in round the back.
It all makes perfect sense today and a good read, shame about loosing a man but they have to make the rescue attempt, if not then no one will risk being captured again if they know they are on their own.
Looking forward to the next episode although I'm spending half my pocket money at the cinema now. :(

    3. Thanks John, why does everyone think they have to go on a rescue mission ? the mission must come first they all knew that when they signed up.

Only half your pocket money ? I'll have try harder as for that drachma I'll call over to collect next Tuesday :)

  3. Well, so much for being covert! On the plus side, they got some info; on the minus side, some wounds and one person captured. Are the remaining team going to have to go for a rescue?

    Great sets and locations, too!

    1. Thanks Fitz, well it start covert but they messed up, they are only novice's don't forget so over all they didn't do to bad :) I seem to remember Hans Solo saying in Starwars that marching into a detention block was not what he had in mind :)

To answer your question that's a call Unsworth has to make & not an easy one for two reasons, first time is not on their side as they know from the visit to the Beasts Head that something big is going down soon, second what if more of them get captured trying to spring Carter ? against that is what if under interrogation Carter talks ?
